The Work vs. Workout Debate

I have recently changed my work schedule which has had a not-so-good effect on my workout schedule. I am still able to run but I have not been able to make it to the gym as much and it is really beginning to irritate me. I am used to hitting the gym everyday for at least 45 minutes. Needless to say the last four days have been quite the letdown.

My question for anyone reading this is, how do you deal with “the monkey wrench”? I still do a bit of exercise on my own at home but I am missing out on the weight training. Luckily I do have the next two days to hit the gym. I would love to know how the rest of you cope with the days where you just can not fit the gym into your schedule when you really want to hit the weights. Does anyone have any recommendations?

i would recommend -> lifting rather than hitting. 😉

    • Are you into any lifting?

Pfft. With my nerd tag? I’d probably hurt myself just looking at a weight.

Seriously, though, did a little in high school but I royally messed up my back a few years ago so doing a lot of stuff hasn’t been the same since.

Snark aside, and trying to be more relevant in a place way out of my league, the only thing I can really think of is trying to see if you have access to a 24 hour gym? My bf goes to work out at the weirdest hours because, well, he can. Or what about strength resistance bands and the like? Since it’s probably unreasonable to try and get a decent set of weights for home.

      • Resistance bands are awesome as long as you have the proper exercises and the will to do them. Are you into running at all?

Nope and never really have been. I was an asthmatic child so running always felt like dying. I walk, though. Whether it be with my dogs or on the elliptical in the garage. Although, I do run a lot playing with my dogs in the back yard. XD For some reason they like being chased around.

      • AWEsome! The important thing is that you find time for exercise. What ever form works best for you… and enjoy it! We have a 7yr old american boxer (dog) and she loves to be chased as well. Only problem is… if she takes a running leap, she can knock me over easily. Good times!

If I can’t fit a workout into my schedule I will eat really healthy! I usually feel a lot better and I’m not sacrificing my work out!

Why not incorporate a vigorous yoga sequence into your workout program? In a 45 minutes Astanga series you do nearly 50 push ups. Add in the headstand and handstand (against the wall) and you are working the muscles as much as at the gym. And you can do it all from home! It would be a great substitute for when you can’t get to the gym 🙂

    • Yoga is definitely a workout but I am not well versed in it. I would need a teacher to at least show me how to properly do the poses. It would be an awesome plan if I was more familiar with the routines. Thanks for the help!

  4. I would recommend yoga or picking up a hobby that’s also a workout. I kickbox and 30 minutes of that will kill you.

    • Kickboxing sounds like it would suit me well! I have started yoga, but I am not comfortable enough with my poses to practice on my own. Though I do do Sun Salutations at home.
